Wiki Loves Monuments UK Winning Entries Announced
Category: News
Back in September, we posted on our news blog to let you know about the Wiki Loves Monuments competition that was taking place. This is an annual, international photography competition, supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, which aims to crowd-source high quality, open-license images of monuments and listed buildings from around the world. In the first round, 48 countries encourage their citizens to photograph their country’s heritage. Each country then provides up to 10 of these images to be entered into the international round.
Wikimedia UK is one of many international areas that takes part and in November, the winning UK entries that will be entered into the wider competition were announced. There was some amazing news – images of Scotland took the top three spaces! First place went to an image of Kilchurn Castle at sunrise, second place was for an image of Bass Rock, and coming in third was an image of the sun setting on Commando Memorial.
All of the UK winning entries, including the three listed above, can be viewed here and you can also see the winning images from each of the 48 participating countries here.
Massive congratulations to all of the winning entries and also to everybody who uploaded photos. Thanks to them, there are now a number of beautiful, high-quality images of the UK’s monuments which document the heritage of the country and it is great that these are now available for free viewing worldwide.
