The Most Borrowed Books in Scotland Last Year

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins was the most borrowed book in libraries in Scotland (and also the UK as a whole) during 2015/16, it was revealed today.
Paula Hawkins commented: “As a voracious reader possessed of a fevered imagination, my childhood visits to the library were a thrill. I credit those weekly trips with making me the reader – and the writer – I became, so I could not be more delighted to discover that The Girl on the Train was the most borrowed book from UK libraries last year.”
Our 2017 Conference keynote speaker Val McDermid also appeared in the top 20 with her book Splinter the Silence.
Overall, crime fiction and thrillers are hugely popular in Scotland with nine of the Top 10 Most Borrowed Books in Scotland belonging to this genre. One title by James Patterson also features in the Top 10. US thriller writer James Patterson was today revealed as the Most Borrowed Author in libraries across the UK as a whole for the tenth year running.

Data released by the Public Lending Right (PLR) office shows exactly which books and authors proved most popular with library borrowers between July 2015 and June 2016. PLR was established by Act of Parliament in 1979 and is the responsibility of the British Library. PLR gives authors the legal right to receive payment from government each time their books are loaned through the public library system.
