The impact of Scotland’s libraries: surveys for library workers now live!

Category: Blog, News

A library nook with bookshelves and a comfy reading chair.

If you are a public librarian, school librarian, teacher or volunteer working closely with a library service in Scotland, Scottish Book Trust want to hear from you!

They are undertaking an independent research project, led by Research and Evaluation Manager Éadaoín Lynch, to report on the value and impact of our public and school libraries – and showcase how they are intrinsic to removing inequity across many intersections of Scottish life.

As CILIPS members know, Scotland’s school libraries have no national mandate for adequate library provision. Scotland’s public libraries, though they do face a national mandate for ‘adequate’ library provision, have no enforced standard for what that must offer. As a result, across the public and school library sector, Scotland’s communities face a lack of equitable access. SBT work across every local authority, striving to offer an opportunity for all people to tell their stories; as such, they are uniquely positioned to bear witness to existing inequity and to use their research as a foundation to advocacy for why libraries are essential to Scotland’s citizens now more than ever.

Each survey should take up to 20 minutes to complete and all will be open until the end of January 2024.

The Surveys:

At the end of the survey, you have the option to sign up for a further research interview. If you have any questions, please get in touch with the Research and Evaluation team at research@scottishbooktrust.com.

If you wish to read through all the survey questions before participating, please download the word documents from the Scottish Book Trust website. For hard copy submissions, please feel free to print out the word document and this PDF for your Freepost label.

Please spread the word, CILIPS community!
