#Library5 2020 Day 1

Libraries Week this year was all about celebrating libraries and their vital contributions to the UK’s book culture. The theme was ‘Your Passport to Reading’ and so we kicked off our #Library5 campaign with the simple theme of ‘Reading’, asking libraries and library staff to showcase the different ways they help get their community reading.  We were delighted to see so many libraries from all sectors of the profession sharing images and information. Below is some of the content shared on Day 1 which demonstrates the essential role libraries play in encouraging a reading culture:

  • A number of public libraries highlighted that reading doesn’t just have to be about physical books, opting to share information about accessing e- and audiobooks via BorrowBox. Glasgow Libraries and Inverclyde Libraries both offer the BorrowBox service which you can access for free with a library membership
  • As well as supporting healthcare staff to access up-to-date, quality research and evidence, the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Library Network also holds a historical collection which can be accessed at the New Victoria Hospital
  • NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Library Network runs a Reading Challenge each year to encourage health care staff to strike a work/life balance and read for pleasure
  • Chirs Wilson, E-Services Librarian at CultureNL Libraries, highlights the monthly Facebook boog group he runs. CultureNL Libraries also note other options for getting involved with reading
  • A great tweet from Aberdeen Grammar School Library highlighted that reading is fun but also good for our health. They shared some recent returns that the pupils have been enjoying
  • Many libraries host regular author events to encourage their communities to get reading. Shetland Library has continued to do this even through lockdown and shared a post about a recent online author event they held which is now available on YouTube for anybody to watch!
  • South Ayrshire Libraries have used OverDrive to put together a ‘Bookish Reads’ collection with suggested titles for their users to enjoy – a great example of how libraries work to create a reading culture in their communities by making great reads accessible
  • Inverclyde Libraries run a ‘Read and Recommend’ FaceBook group to encourge their users to talk about books and share recommendations
  • Culture Perth & Kinross staff love to read! To encourage their users to do the same, they created a display of some of the books staff read during lockdown – we loved this idea!
  • Many school librarians have been delivering services in innovative ways throughout the pandemic. Miss McLean at St Ninians High School in Kirkintilloch has been running a mobile library, delivering books to pupils and staff to keep the school reading and supplied with books – check out the purple book trolley!
  • A whopping 1,500 books have been borrowed from St George’s School library between mid-August and Libraries Week showing just how much pupils and staff value their school library
  • West Dunbartonshire Libraries shared a brilliant quote from one of their users who spoke about how valuable the Book to Borrow click and collect service has been to them. West Dunbartonshire, like many public libraries, are using the service to ensure their community keeps reading even when access to the library is different to usual
  • Preston Lodge School Library held their first Anime/Manga/Comic club on the first day of Libraries Week and they shared what they got up to – a great example of how school librarians encourage pupils to get invovled and read a wide variety of literature
  • Mr Leitch, School Librarian at Keith Grammar School and Buckie High loves to encourage pupils to make time for reading and the pupils at Keith Grammar School have been reading lots – take a look at some of their recently returned books
  • The Library at Elgin Academy shared how authors videos encourage reading in the school
  • Further Education libraries offer important resources for students taking courses. West College Scotland Library has lots of new books in ready to catalogue and make avaialble
  • ON Fife Libraries Colleague Hannah shares a story for Day 1 of #Library5 – we loved this! Meanwhile, Reading Groups Coordinator Sopie was busy packing boxes with books for reading group members in Fife
